Who is Kenzie?
Kenzie is Hanna's stepsister, being driven back to campus by Hanna's boyfriend. She talks when she is nervous, and the whole series grows out of a conversation that does not stay polite.
The passenger
Kenzie is in every frame of this series, which is unusual for the format — she never leaves the car until the motel.
In the free episodes she is nervous about where she is going and talks to cover it. That is the mechanism: a conversation that starts as small talk about campus, drifts to her stepsister, and arrives somewhere neither of them can reverse out of. She is not a schemer. She is a person in a car with six hours to fill.
