The setup
Touching the queen is punishable by death. That is the premise, stated plainly, and the series does not spend time establishing it.
She is twenty-two and newly in power. Of every man in the castle she picks the lowest-born guard to stand the night watch outside her bedchamber — a posting that puts him within arm’s reach of the one thing that would kill him. Then she starts daring him.
Why the premise works
Most of this catalogue builds its tension out of proximity: somebody is in the next room, somebody could walk in. Sworn to the Queen builds it out of consequence instead. Nobody is going to walk in; the guard is alone with her by design. What stops him is a law, and the person testing the law is the one who embodies it.
